Meeting Norway’s New RME Requirements: Digital Consent and BankID Integration

Norway’s energy sector is adapting to important new regulations from the Norwegian Energy Regulatory Authority (RME) aimed at improving security and trust in digital processes. From June 1, 2025, all electricity providers must ensure that customer authentication and consent, especially for switching suppliers, meet strict standards. Specifically, the new rules require the use of qualified electronic signatures at the “High” assurance level, as outlined by the EU’s eIDAS regulation. The main goal is to protect consumers and make sure that all digital approvals are both secure and legally binding.

Why Are These Changes Happening?

The RME’s updated requirements are about strengthening consumer protection in an increasingly digital market. In the past, switching electricity providers or signing new contracts could be done with less secure methods. Now, the regulations ensure that only the person with the right authority can approve these important actions, reducing the risk of fraud and misunderstandings.

Key Deadlines

The new regulations officially took effect on June 1, 2025. However, providers have until the first quarter of 2026 to be fully compliant. After that, all digital signatures and customer approvals must meet the new standards.

What Does This Mean for UtilityCloud’s Customers?

For UtilityCloud’s platform customers, these changes don’t have to be a headache. UtilityCloud has partnered with Criipto to build a solution that integrates BankID, Norway’s most widely used digital identification system, directly into the platform. This means that UtilityCloud customers don’t need to develop or maintain their own signature or authentication systems. Everything is ready to go, and end customers can approve agreements and switch providers using the same BankID they already use for banking and public services.

“We’re really pleased with how UtilityCloud handled the new RME requirements. Their solution with integrated BankID made it easy for us to stay compliant, and our customers now have a secure and seamless way to approve agreements. It saved us a lot of time and effort compared to building something ourselves and the project was delivered on time.”

How Was the Solution Implemented?

UtilityCloud started preparing for these changes early, so there was no rush when the requirements became official. By working closely with Criipto, UtilityCloud was able to integrate BankID’s signature solution quickly and efficiently. Criipto’s developer-friendly tools made it possible to complete the technical integration, including testing and approval from BankID, in just a few weeks. This is much faster than what many other providers have managed, as they often have to build and maintain their own integrations from scratch.

Why Was UtilityCloud’s Implementation So Smooth?

The key to UtilityCloud’s smooth rollout has been its modern technical platform and its partnership with Criipto. Criipto already had ready-made integrations with BankID and keeps everything updated to meet the latest regulations. This allowed UtilityCloud to focus on delivering value to its customers, rather than getting bogged down in technical details.

Automatic Access for All Customers

One major benefit is that UtilityCloud’s new digital signature and approval solution is available to all customers automatically after simple configuration. There’s no need for extra integration or development, customers can simply activate the feature and start using it. This ensures that all UtilityCloud users are compliant with RME’s requirements without any additional effort or cost.

By working together, UtilityCloud and Criipto have made it easy for energy providers and their customers to meet Norway’s new RME requirements. The solution is secure, user-friendly, and ready for the future, helping both providers and end users navigate the digital energy market with confidence.
